You are a PM at a company selling school management software to 400 private schools. Teachers send parents an average of 14 messages a week through the app. Parent app opens average 1.3 a week. Teachers report spending 40 minutes a day on parent communication. Parents report 'too many notifications' as the top complaint and also, separately, 'I did not know about the exam' as the top escalation to the school office.
Design a feature to serve this better. Say who you are designing for, what the core problem is, what you would build, and how you would know it worked.
100 points, 60% to pass.
The two parent complaints look contradictory and are not: 14 messages a week with no hierarchy means everything is a notification, so nothing is. The design problem is prioritisation, not volume reduction, and the person to design for has to be chosen — the teacher spending 40 minutes, or the parent missing the exam date. Strong answers separate broadcast from actionable: a dated, structured channel for things a parent must act on (exams, fees, permissions) against an ambient feed for everything else. Measure the escalation rate to the office, which is the real failure, rather than app opens, which would go up for bad reasons too.
